Remember that Greenland Heatwave?

Here is one of many reports as a reminder. For years now, Greenland and the sea to its north have experienced never-before high temperatures.

A research report, dated 10 October, 2018 offers an explanation.

Reduced temperature differential between the Arctic and the tropics has made the Arctic jet stream wander all over the place. In 2011, its convolutions caused a cyclonic storm over the Sahara, lifting huge quantities of dust into the stratosphere. Then the jet stream took that dust and warm air into the Arctic.

This is what that looks like:

Meandering polar jet stream visible in red colours, upper-level trough visible in blue (graph by ECMWF).

The warm air directly caused warmth as it settled down. What the dust is doing is even worse: it reduces the reflectance of the ice.

These kinds of unprecedented, subtle interactions are the reason that every prediction of the rate of climate change has proven to be wildly optimistic. I have no doubt the latest IPCC predictions, urgent as they are, will also prove to be unrealistically positive. They say we must take urgent action within the next 20 years.

I say, we must take urgent action 40 years ago!

A sane society would be on the same kind of emergency footing as during the two world wars. Let’s do it personally, and pressure the politicians and moneybags to follow us. It’s not as if they could take their money and power with them.

About Dr Bob Rich

I am a professional grandfather. My main motivation is to transform society to create a sustainable world in which my grandchildren and their grandchildren in perpetuity can have a life, and a life worth living. This means reversing environmental idiocy that's now threatening us with extinction, and replacing culture of greed and conflict with one of compassion and cooperation.

Acflory, it’s all right. We are all here to learn Lessons. When the students have burned down the school that is Earth, let me reassure you, we can meet again in one of the billions of other schools in the universe. You might enjoy reading my book, Ascending Spiral.

Reblogged this on Meeka's Mind and commented:
Climate Change is very much on my mind, and a part of my core motivation, but I don’t say much about it. My thanks to Bob for saying it so well.

Well said, Bob. If we only knew half as much as we thought we knew, we’d be panicking by now. Instead, the idiots in Canberra, and elsewhere, refuse to even follow sane economic projections much less climate ones.

My dear, we need more sane people on this planet. But the idiots in Canberra have hopefully got a bullet in the bum from the Victorian elections. Scott Morrison, that past torturer of asylum seekers, is unlikely to cuddle a lump of coal in parliament again.

Thanks, Bob. We need reminders like this now and then.
