You can do this exercise sitting in a comfortable chair, or lying on a firm surface. Your body temperature will drop, so you may want to cover yourself with a rug.
Relaxation will lower your blood pressure, so be careful when you stand up after it. Get the blood flowing first with some vigorous movement.
Make sure you are comfortable: bladder empty, neither too hot nor too cold.
Please close your eyes and focus on your breathing.
Think of a source of healing light, way out in space. This could be the sun, a star, an entire galaxy, an angel, God. Whatever you choose will be right for you. One client chose the dog of her childhood, who was named “Angel.”
Beautiful light is coming from this source. You can choose any colour for this light, or it can be silver.
Feel this beautiful healing light shine on the top of your head, gently penetrating, soothing, calming.
Now extend the healing light to be level with your eyes, like a glowing cap.
Now down to your mouth.
Now your entire head is glowing within, beautiful.
Have the glowing light soothe your neck; the strong muscles that carry the head.
Now down into your shoulders, dissolving all the knots there. Feel both your arms grow heavy.
Now down both upper arms, to the elbows.
Both lower arms to the wrists.
And to the tips of your fingers, glowing.
Next breath, have the beautiful glowing light soothe your upper body. The muscles of your chest. Your upper back. Heart and lungs, glowing.
Now the lower body. The muscles of your stomach. Lower back. All those wonderful organs in there, working perfectly.
Next your buttocks. People carry so much tension there! Feel the glowing light melt it away.
Now the upper legs, to the knees. And the lower legs, to the ankles.
And your feet, right to the tips of your toes.
Top to toe, glowing beautiful within, resting, at peace.
Now I am going to slowly count backward from five.
Five: feel the support for your body, and where your arms and legs are.
Four: become aware of the sounds around you; whatever you can hear.
Three: again become aware of your breathing.
Two: move your arms and legs around.
And one: when you’re ready, open your eyes.
