The area of East Gippsland in Victoria, Australia is known for logging. My long term friend and comrade Jill Redwood has lived there for decades, often literally afraid for her life. Many locals drive around with stickers on their vehicles: “Fertilise the bush: bulldoze a Greenie!”
Maybe the terrible bushfires in the area have caused a change, but a change there is. Fellow Australian Greens member Peter Gardner has reported that East Gippsland shire has joined 45 other local government areas in a collaboration to convert all their electricity use to renewables by 2030.
My local council in Yarra Ranges Shire is also part of the same collaboration, but then it has been a conservation champion for years. I am delighted that even East Gippsland has joined.

Actually, it doesn’t matter even if it is too late. We do our best anyway. (This is one of my tools for staying sane.)
I don’t think they have stopped logging beautiful old growth forest, though, which is far more important than solar panels and things.

They haven’t, that’s for sure. And here in Tasmania there is currently a fight between environmentalists and a Chinese mining company who have applied to clear a large section of the historic Tarkine in order to create a new tailings dam! Unbelievable!!

It appears that there is a shift towards concern for the environment happening among us average people. Maybe it’s only moving slowly, but hopefully there will eventually be sufficient pressure to convince big business that they had better line themselves up with their customers or they might go to the wall. Just hope it will not be too late!
