Healesville and Upper Yarra Greens essay contest

Topic

Humans are destroying all life on our planet: we are in the 6th extinction event. Australia is among the worst in this ultimate of crimes. Also, both major parties have been violating international law in their treatment of asylum seekers, there is a constant stream of corruption in government—politics is a mess.

Australia is currently ruled by the COALition, which is serving its masters, big business, by galloping toward extinction. Since the advent of Bob Hawke, Labor has been Liberal Lite, and it has become even more so since the 2019 electoral disaster. The Greens is the only Federal opposition.

Everything the Australian Greens do is based on the Four Pillars:
Ecological sustainability;
Grassroots participatory democracy;
Social justice;
Peace and nonviolence.

The Greens do not accept big donations, so cannot be bought. We place working for a survivable, sustainable society at the top of the agenda, while working for fairness, decency and compassion for all, as these Four Pillars imply.

This is why the Healesville and Upper Yarra Greens have chosen “The Four Pillars of the Greens” as the topic for our essay contest.

Choose an issue you are passionate about. This could be the Great Barrier Reef, or the logging of forests devastated by bushfires, or business’s shameful treatment of Aboriginal heritage, or the deliberate torture of asylum seekers, or homelessness… There are all too many ways Australia needs to change. Then write your essay, clearly tying it to one or more of the Four Pillars.

About Dr Bob Rich

I am a professional grandfather. My main motivation is to transform society to create a sustainable world in which my grandchildren and their grandchildren in perpetuity can have a life, and a life worth living. This means reversing environmental idiocy that's now threatening us with extinction, and replacing culture of greed and conflict with one of compassion and cooperation.
