A research study from the University of Davis has reported that the number of car “accidents” has halved in California since the lockdown. This is a $1 billion saving in medical and other expenses, in addition to the reduction in suffering.
But this gives me another reason to cry out against the idiocy of modern society. Perhaps, when you are allowed to go anywhere, do anything within reason, you might still choose to minimise car use. You may currently have time to think. Use it constructively to re-engineer your life so you can live more simply.
In my book on depression, I report on a case study: one of my clients whose job was being outsourced to India. His major complaint was that his last six months had to be spent on training his replacement. He liked the Indian man who would do his job at a quarter of the cost to the company, but sure as hell hated losing his job. He and I together worked to redesign life for him and his family, and he came out ahead — not financially, but in every way that matters.
Maybe you can put your own silver lining on the pandemic by using the opportunity to do the same?
