Virus or no, climate change is still a bigger threat

COVID19 may well end up killing millions of people. It is a severe crisis. However, climate change has already killed tens of millions of people, and is likely to kill billions.

So, it is important to understand the natural mechanisms of extreme weather events. Here is an interesting new study: coral tells us about future drought and fires in Australia co-occurring with droughts in Africa.

About Dr Bob Rich

I am a professional grandfather. My main motivation is to transform society to create a sustainable world in which my grandchildren and their grandchildren in perpetuity can have a life, and a life worth living. This means reversing environmental idiocy that's now threatening us with extinction, and replacing culture of greed and conflict with one of compassion and cooperation.

That coral study is interesting. And thanks to you, today I’ve learnt about a new thing (the Indian Ocean Dipole).

Oddly enough (although perhaps not so odd), I commented elsewhere earlier today about the fact that the various nations of the world have instigated draconian measures in an attempt to contain the coronavirus, measures that are harming the economy. Yet for some years now, measures to combat climate change have always been minimised and sidelined ‘because they would do too much harm to the economy’. It’s only when danger is knocking on the door that homo fatuus brutus wakes up and actually answers it..

I’ve had that discordant reaction explained to me. COVID19 hits rich and poor alike. Senior politicians, billionaires, jetsetters are all at personal risk. So, of course we, who are merely fodder for their desires, must make sacrifices to protect everyone (um… them).
Climate change? Doing something about it would interfere with their infinite wealth-and-power-gathering desires, so cognitive dissonance kicks in. They can escape to Mars, or New Zealand, or whatever… Let the peasants suffer!
