Concerned about climate change?
Greta Thunberg will have reason to hope when she sees that mainstream society is committed to turning things around.
Until then, none of us has a realistic basis for hope.
How might we catalyse mainstream commitment?
I have set up the Great Transition Initiative for this purpose. We have an international network, with colleagues in England, Scotland, Sweden, Germany, India, Thailand, the United States, Canada and across Australia.
It helps to have a positive goal. We are championing the goal of
transitioning to a life-sustaining society, rather than continuing on our present course of ecological self-destruction.
I wonder if this goal make sense to you?
An unexpected resource
There are millions of groups that care about environmental and social well-being. Our combined personal networks are massive.
Our idea is to inspire their members (folks like us) to communicate with their friends, neighbours and business colleagues about our existential threats and what to do about it.
If we can take this to scale, we have a means of bypassing mainstream media and fostering the conversations and thinking necessary to turn things around.
The Great Transition Splash
Our next milestone is the Great Transition Splash. It will be during the 2nd week in September. The idea is to have as many voices as possible simultaneously articulating the goal of transitioning to a life-sustaining society, and explaining what’s involved.
Ready to use communication tools, including sample emails, guerrilla marketing tactics, and Kitchen Table Conversations, are available on the Great Transition initiative website.
Please work with us
I’m writing to ask you to consider working with us. Participating need not take an inordinate amount of your time. It could be as simple as sending a few emails, as sophisticated as inviting leaders to participate, or as personal as conducting Kitchen Table Conversations about systemic change.
This is an innovative approach to social change. We focus on helping people think better, rather than just relying on messages.
Please review Catalysing mass commitment to transformative change. If it makes sense to you, and you are willing to lend your influence to this, please send me an email.
Yours for a world that works for all,
Andrew
PS We have a regular open Zoom conversation Wednesday mornings, 9 AM Sydney time (4 PM Tuesday San Francisco time, a day before). It would be great to talk with you!
Cheers,
Andrew Gaines
