Italian ship defies Italian racism

I find this project to be utterly inspiring.

In recent times, the Italian government has swung onto the Trumpian path of hatred and inhumanity. Ships saving refugees from drowning have been turned away.

Michael Hardt and Sandro Mezzadra have established Operation Mediterranean, which now owns a rescue ship, the Mare Jonio. Since it is registered in Italy, and has a mostly Italian crew, it cannot be refused entry to Italian ports.

The excuse for barring more people from Africa is that Europe is being swamped by them. True, but… the solution is not mass murder by inaction. Rather, the causes need to be addressed:

Stop the Saudi attack on Yemen. Stop the forever Syrian war. Stop the many conflicts in Sub-Saharan Africa.

For about forever, western actions within Africa have been ways of stealing their wealth, and empowering corrupt elites. Social justice would halt the conflicts, and the tsunami of refugees.

About Dr Bob Rich

I am a professional grandfather. My main motivation is to transform society to create a sustainable world in which my grandchildren and their grandchildren in perpetuity can have a life, and a life worth living. This means reversing environmental idiocy that's now threatening us with extinction, and replacing culture of greed and conflict with one of compassion and cooperation.

I fully agree with you, Florence.
My point is that the way to deal with the terrible refugee issue is to eliminate the reasons people need to leave home.
This is what Buddhist equanimity is for. I practice it, otherwise I’d jump off this planet.

Yes, agreed. But who will administer the social justice? Who will stop the war in Syria, the Saudis in Yemen? Once upon a time, the US together with the UN did things like that. No more. Now, the US is allied with those who want more war, more exploitation, more money to the elites. It’s a bitter time.
