Please read this powerful essay by George Monbiot.
It makes me feel less alone. I’ve been making all his points for decades, and am delighted that someone famous agrees with me.
George’s and my essential points are:
- Live simply so you may simply live.
- Refuse to buy into the consumer society.
- Stuff is killing us.
- You can’t have indefinite growth in a limited system.
- The very structure of the global economic system needs complete change.
George doesn’t touch on how to achieve this change, but then, Guardian articles have a word limit.
Another great man, Edward Goldsmith, wrote in the 1970s that a leader is someone running ahead of a crowd, shouting, “Follow me!” If the crowd changes direction, then either the leader must do the same, or become a loner instead.
So, please change direction, and run along with me instead of with the moneybags of the world. You will be surprised at how much your life will improve.
