Halfway to 2 C — According to NASA, We Just Blew Past an Ominous Milestone

And there is nothing safe about 2 degrees C. It is a disastrously high “limit.”

2 C.

It’s the amount of warming past pre-industrial times that the IPCC says we should try to avoid this Century in order to prevent the worst consequences of human-caused climate change. It’s the so-called safe limit, even though there’s nothing really safe about it and we should probably be aiming more for a below 1.5 C target.

1 C.

It’s the amount of warming between pre-industrial times and, according to the latest data from NASA, the first half of 2015. In other words, temperatures during the first six months of 2015 are now at least halfway toward freeing some of the nastiest climate monsters in the closet.

*   *   *   *   *

According to NASA GISS, June of 2015 was tied with 1998 as the hottest of any June in the entire 135 year global climate record. Coming in at +0.76 C above NASA’s 20th Century average…

About Dr Bob Rich

I am a professional grandfather. My main motivation is to transform society to create a sustainable world in which my grandchildren and their grandchildren in perpetuity can have a life, and a life worth living. This means reversing environmental idiocy that's now threatening us with extinction, and replacing culture of greed and conflict with one of compassion and cooperation.

      So, what is your point?

In the 1970s, 40 years ago, people formed opinions based on the information available to them. The way science works is, conclusions are ALWAYS tentative. In religion, you have a belief and stick to it. In science, you don’t believe anything, but go wherever the evidence takes you.

40 years ago, I predicted catastrophic global warming. So, I read the signs right. That doesn’t make me better or worse than people who changed their minds when they acknowledged new evidence.

      • Hi Bob; in the 70’s they had a theory – ”dimming from CO2” and were always emphasizing places where was colder than normal, for few days / and avoided warmer places, now is same tactic; only avoid where is colder (as it is now here in eastern Australia, freezing cold; no mentioning on Warmist blogs – they search for warmer places; when no any – they invent lies about polar caps)
Bob, predicting weather / climate was the oldest profession, prostitution was second oldest; nothing scientific about climatology!!! Bob, I have the science! are you good sport, to read it?!

It was invented by shonky geologist, not able to find jobs in mining; they concocted lies about past phony ”global” warmings / coolings and ”Skeptics” are worshiping those! will find it in link #1 – please read every sentence

I have the truth; fundamentalist from both camps are trying to silencing it; will find it in #2 link, and there are few more, just ask; if you have stamina and dignity for the truth

    • Dr Bob Rich says:

I am sorry, you are fooled by wishful thinking. I can imagine individual scientists thinking in the way you describe. After all, scientists are people, with all the strengths and weaknesses of what that means. However, science as a method of inquiry has built-in safeguards against false conclusions: evidence disconfirms them.

Weather is local and transient. Climate is long-term and regional or global, depending on your level of analysis.

So far, 2015 has been globally significantly warmer than 2104, which is currently the hottest 12 months on record.

1997 had an unusually cold winter in Australia. It was succeeded by 1998, the hottest global year on record until recently.

Anyway, you’re welcome to believe whatever you like. I go with sources like the CSIRO, NASA, UN agencies. The information is sufficiently convincing that even traditionally very conservative, right-wing organisations have become convinced.

What some people theorised in the past is irrelevant to the current evidence. The thousands of scientists studying climate are not in any sort of a conspiracy. That would be impossible to organise, and scientists don’t work that way. Getting them all to agree is herding cats.

We have now passed several irreversible tipping points. The most damaging are:
Ever-increasing melting of Arctic sea ice has reduced the albedo of the Arctic ocean, absorbing energy. Arctic warming is at least twice the rate of the rest of the planet.

Because there is a huge quantity of carbon that has been locked up in the Arctic for millions of years, now we have exponentially increasing methane release from permafrost, and from methane clathrates from the shallow sea floors in the area.

So, by all means, invest in a fur coat. I’ll continue to do my best to reduce global warming.
